Jesús Ramos-Martín holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and MSc in Environmental Management from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He holds an MA in Environmental Politics and MPhil in Ecological Economics from Keele University, UK. Jesús Ramos-Martín is an ecological economist with expertise in the field of economic development and evolution of human systems from a biophysical point of view, by applying concepts from energy analysis, thermodynamics and complex systems theory. He also has expertise in societal metabolism, integrated environmental assessment, and social multi-criteria evaluation. Currently he is an assistant professor at the Department of Economics and Economic History and researcher at the Institute for Environmental Science and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His research has strong links with Latin America, where he has been lecturer of Ecological Economics at FLACSO (Ecuador) and where he organises the Biannual Iberoamerican Congress on Development and Environment, and he is co-editor of the Iberoamerican Journal of Ecological Economics, both initiatives from the Iberoamerican Network for Ecological Economics.
His research focuses on the energy metabolism of societies, within the framework of ecological economics. The main focus is to understand the way economies evolve over time by dissipating energy, the way they structure themselves, and the main constraints they face both internal (technological and/or demographical) and external (availability of resources and disposal of waste). His collaboration with Mario Giampietro and Kozo Mayumi goes beyond the empirical work and includes development of conceptual tools for multi-scale analysis. Recently, an area of particular interest is household energy metabolism and time-use. Something he would like to explore in the future is the application of dynamic modeling to their existing research. In the past he has also done research on the politics and economics of climate change. He is a member of the UAB Research Group #1886 Integrated Assessment: Sociology, Technology and the Environment, and the Research Group UHE: Economic Institutions, Quality of Life, and the Environment, SGR2009-00962, recognized by the Catalan Government.
