International Workshop on Environmental Justice and Conflicts

Summary
This workshop brings together world specialists in environmental justice (including Robert Bullard, who started this field of study in the 1980s). It will be organized around three roundtables, two keynote speeches, and some presentations on research recently conducted at ICTA-UAB or elsewhere. It will take place at the unique space of La Pedrera, a Gaudi-designed building in the center of Barcelona.
Roundtable 1: Conducting Environmental Justice (EJ) studies: challenges of methods and approaches (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods; action or collaborative research vs. individual research; rural versus urban research; and multidisciplinary research)
Roundtable 2: The breadth of environmental justice research: What is EJ scholarship? What is the role and place of conflicts (open and latent) in EJ studies? What are the cutting-edge and relevant types of EJ studies?
Roundtable 3: Needed and future directions for EJ research. What issues need to be examined? What are the theories that require further development? Where does EJ start and where does it stop? How can we incorporate feminist approaches? How can we move beyond the North South divide and engage in critical comparative research?
The participants in each roundtable are: Robert Bullard, Joan Martinez Alier, Peter Newell, David Pellow, Lisa Sun-Hee Park, David Szablowski, Giorgos Kallis, Stefania Barca, Rikard Warlenius, and Isabelle Anguelovski. The roundtables will be organized around a discussion and debate of the main questions above and they will be open to other participants' questions.
