Welcome to the joint website of the Erasmus Summer School and the International Conference on Environmental Conflicts and Justice

Climate and ecological changes together with economic crisis are intensifying tensions and conflicts over access and use of environmental resources in developed and developing countries. Understanding the causes of these conflicts and responding to them equitably requires a multi-disciplinary approach that cuts across established disciplinary boundaries. The Erasmus Summer School on Environmental Conflicts and Justice has the aim of building the capacities of the next generation of researchers able to study and analyze the multi-dimensional causes of environmental conflicts, contributing to the correction of environmental injustices. The School will be held at the premises of ICTA, UAB in Barcelona from the 25th of June to the 10th of July 2010. The School is coordinated by the Eco2BCN group (www.eco2bcn.es) of the Institute for Environmental Studies and Technology (icta.uab.es) at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. It is a joint project with the participation of the Universities of Manchester and Lund, the Central European University in Budapest and the Vienna Institute of Social Ecology, financed by the Spanish Organismo Autónomo Programas Educativos Europeos under the Erasmus program of the European Commission's DG for Education and Culture. Forty students from the five participating institutes, all developing Masters or PhD research on the study of environmental conflicts, will receive specialised theoretical, methodological and empirical courses from authorities in the field to advance their research and professional skills.

International Conference on Environmental Conflicts and Justice

In parallel to the School, Eco2BCN/ICTA is also hosting on the 2nd and 3rd of July at the Casa del Mar in central Barcelona the International Conference on Environmental Conflicts and Justice with the support of the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Inovacion. Regional and local case-studies of environmental injustices will be presented and analyzed, shedding light on their causes and discussing the policies and politics needed to address them.
